The publication explores how sound interacts with its surroundings and how it can be harnessed as a medium for artistic expression. By drawing upon various disciplines such as acoustics, physics, and music theory, Active Noise investigates the scientific principles underpinning sound and its transmission across different environments.

The book starts with a wide-angle view of how sound interacts with its environment, and gradually narrows down to its impact on human physiology. Finally, it delves into the realm of digital sound visualization and examines how users generate sound.

The use of pink and green colors is inspired by pink noise, which encompasses all the audible frequencies for humans, and green noise, with lower frequencies that resemble natural sounds.

The generative code randomly produces letters that mimic the frequencies it detects through audio sensing. These patterns are seen in the intro and outro pages of the book.
